Services Offered to Children
The La Vista Public Library offers many services to children of the community. Below is a listing of current services offered to children. For information about these services, email the Library or call at 402-537-3900
Book Bugs –
Children in 2nd and 3rd grade are invited to come to the library every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-4:10 p.m. to learn about books, and enjoy reading. We will read books, complete can activity related to the book, and have a treat. Book Bugs starts on Tuesday, January 12th and will end on Tuesday, April 20th. Registration is not required.
Craft Days -
Craft Days are held various times throughout the year. The sessions are from 3:30-4:00 for children in fifth grade and younger. Craft days will be held on January 20th and February 18th. Registration is not required.
Family Bingo Nights -
Family Bingo Nights will be held on Thursday, January 14th and Thursday, February 11th from 6-7 p.m. Prizes will be given away for those that get a bingo. Snacks will be provided and registration is not required.
4th and 5th Grade Book Club
The 4th and 5th Grade Book Club will meet the second Friday of each month from September through April at 3:30-4:15 p.m. Our next meeting will be on Friday, January 8th. If you are interested in joining the book club, contact Jodi Linhart at 537-3900 or at email her.
Reading Room
The library staff will be reading to children (infants to 2nd grade) in a “drop in” session that will last 20-30 minutes. Children can be accompanied by a parent or attend the session “on their own” while their parents are in the library. The sessions are every Tuesday at 7:00 pm and every Saturday morning at 10:00 am.
Lapsit Storytime
Lapsit is for library cardholder parents or caregivers and infants from 6 to 18 months of age. It consists of simple stories, songs, finger plays, and other fun activities. It is designed to introduce these young children to the joys of reading. This activity is offered at the same time as Preschool Storytime for the convenience of those who have children in both. Sessions begin promptly at 10:10 am and last approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
The fall session of Lapsit will be offered from January 28th to April 29th. Your child must be registered for this program. Lapsit Registration form
Preschool Storytime
Storytime is offered to library members at no extra charge. These weekly sessions are for the 3 to 5 year old child (not in kindergarten). The aim of story time is to introduce children to the library and to the magic of books and reading as well as develop social skills needed for school. Three sessions will be from 10:00-10:45 a.m. and one session will be from 2:00-2:45 p.m. The storytime format consists of stories, crafts, and an occasional special guest. Registration is required and space is limited. Contact the library for more details.
The fall session of Preschool storytime will be offered from January 18th to April 30th. Your child must be registered for this program. Preschool Registration Form
Toddler Storytime
Storytime is offered to library members at no extra charge. Join Miss Marjie one morning a week for stories, songs, finger plays, and other fun activities. This is a fun time for children between 18 months and three years of age to spend with Mom, Dad, or a caregiver. Toddler Storytime is offered at the same time as Preschool Story time for the convenience of those who have children in both. Sessions begin at 10:10 am and last approximately 25 minutes. Registration is required and is limited to 10 toddlers per session so each can get the attention they need.
The fall session of Toddler storytime will be offered from September 21st to December 10th. Your child must be registered for this program. Toddler Registration Form
Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program Kick-off will be held on Wednesday, June 2nd from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. This year's theme is Make a Spash - Read! Children, birth to fifth grade, will receive their reading packets when they register for this special ten week program.
