If your project will be performed within the City limits by a contractor and/or subcontractors, they must be licensed by the City. 

A Deck

  • You will need to fill out the Light Remodeling and Accessory Permit Application.
  • Provide a site plan of the property showing the house and deck location and size with dimensions to the lot lines and any other structures.
  • The deck drawing is required to show the following:
    • Overall deck size and stair location.
    • Uncovered decks must be a distance of 15 feet from rear property lines and five feet from side property lines.
    • Decks must be six feet from any other detached structure.
    • Post hole locations require 42-inch deep frost footings when attached to the house and 24-inch depth if deck is free-standing.
    • Indicate size of wood beam on your drawing and know that column post sizes must be 6x6.
    • Indicate wood joist sizes and spacing measurement.
    • Ledger beam attached to the house with 1/2" diameter lag bolts that are five inches long at 24 inches on center (staggered).
    • Galvanized joist hangers at the ledger beam.
    • Handrails to be a minimum of three feet high with vertical spindle spacing not allowing the passage of a four-inch sphere.
    • Stair detail as provided by the City.
    • Call for footing inspecting once holes are dug, prior to filling. When the project is complete, call for final inspection.

A Shed in my Backyard
  • You will need to fill out the Light Remodeling and Accessory Permit Application.
  • A permit is required if the shed is 80 square feet or greater.
  • Provide a site plan of the property showing shed location and spacing with dimensions to the lot lines and any other structures.
  • Concrete slab shed floor must have 1/2" diameter anchor bolts at maximum six-feet on center spacing for shed tie-downs.
  • Wood floors of sheds must be provided with four shed tie-down anchors to meet city code.
  • Maximum shed height is 17 feet or less if restricted by local governing covenants (15 feet).
  • Shed MUST BE located a minimum of six feet from any structure or fire proofed to meet city code.

A Fence
  • You will need to fill out the Light Remodeling and Accessory Permit Application.
  • Provide a site plan showing fence location, type and height.
  • Fence posts must be set in concrete at a minimum depth of 24-inches for wood and chain link.
  • Fence location on or in to fence owner's property (this may require a survey).
  • All wood pickets or boards should face to the outside.
  • Front yard fences need to be 12 1/2 feet from the curb and no more than four feet high.
  • Side yard fences, on a corner lot, need to be 12 1/2 feet from the curb or off the right of way.

Driveways/Sidewalks/Curb Cuts
  • You will need to fill out the Light Remodeling and Accessory Permit Application.
  • Provide the
    • Width of the curb cut.
    • Width and length of the driveway. Minimum width of a driveway is 10 feet.
    • If the approach is replaced or the driveway is going out to the street, then the applicant needs an orange First Step Card, that is only available at City Hall. This allows Public Works to inspect the project site and determine curb cuts and/or curb grinds.
    • Submit a drawing with a bird's eye view of the site with dimensions.
    • The concrete in the approach needs to be six inches in depth with a 30 percent limestone mix. One inch expansion join eight feet behind the curb and no expansion joint at the street.
    • The approach area must be inspected prior to pouring the concrete.
    • Length of the sidewalk.
    • Depth of the concrete.
  • Driveways must meet specifications of City Code and must be inspected before pouring.

Other projects (roof, siding, windows)

  • You will need to fill out the Light Remodeling and Accessory Permit Application.
  • You will need to describe the project.
  • Provide estimated cost of materials.
  • Provide the measurements and number of doors and/or windows.
  • For roofing projects,
    • Please indicate whether the roof decking is going to be replaced.
    • An ice barrier must be installed from the eaves to two feet inside of the exterior wall line. The ice barrier needs to be inspected.
    • An inspection is required when the project is complete.
